The heavy spot of a tire and wheel assembly should be determined 
first.

Second, determine the heavy spot of the hub and drum.

Remount the tire and wheel assembly back on the hub and drum, "with 
the weights opposite each other". This will minimize the amount of  
lead weight required.

Finally, balance the complete assembly, using the double weight 
method, using 120 degrees between the heavy spot and the two counter 
weights.

That system is so sensitive that a mens hankie weighing 14 grams 
placed off center at the top of the tire, will make the complete 
assemble turn.

We love to demonstrate that to our visitors.

Todays unicast hub and drum assemblies are not nearly out of balance 
as the old. Therefore if you can only get the tire and wheel 
balanced, you won't be too far off.

Obviously, the finest balancing, is for the complete tire, wheel hub 
and drum assembly.

Many truck tire centers still do that work.
