I asked DH to refresh my memory on this, since he hooked it up. The
ball had about 50 miles on it. He's an old tractor mechanic so yes, it
had been greased and locked down. It was a 24" 1961, towed by a 69
caddy. The railroad had left a large chunk of stuff on the road at
least six inches high. It launched the trailer off the ground when we
hit it. Other than the noise it made when it hit, you couldn't tell
any difference in how it towed. And the chains on that trailer were
too short to cross. We used that same ball with no further problems
for as long as we had that Caddy.
