I have no personal experience with a failure (tire problem - flat or
blowout) with either a single or double axle trailer.

Intuitively, a double axle rig could lose a tire and provide a fail soft way
out.

A blowout with a single axle set up could be a lot more serious.

However, since the trailer, by its very nature is being towed, the
additional drag of a flat tire on one side is not likely to cause a
cataclysmic disaster.

Note that the Airstream uses independently sprung wheels (a result of the
rubber torsion bar design) so a multiple axle Airstream tows very smoothly
as each wheel adapts to the surface of the road independently. Other
multiple axle systems do not tow as well.

Thus one could say that a multiple axle Airstream tows like a single axle
(actually better) with the safety and security of a multiple axle trailer.

SOBs on the other hand typically use linked solid axles, so a failure of one
tire will have a much greater impact on the other tire on the same side.

With a dual (or triple axle) Airstream, you can have a blow out and hardly
notice it.

I would still like to hear from those who have experienced tire problems
with the various axle configurations.
