I agree with almost everything you say except the above statement. That
Vintage Airstreams are lighter than the trailers of their competitors of the
same era is just a persistent myth.

from the 1966 Overlander 26 owners manual  length 26'8"  weight  4250lbs

from the 1967 Official Mobile Home Market Report for Avion (weight was not
listed in earlier years)

         Holiday  length 25'1"   weight 3890lbs
         Travelcader  length 27'9" weight 4480lbs

Interestingly averaging the two Avions comes up with a trailer  of  26'5"
and 4185 lbs, it would be hard to get them closer!
A case can be made that the lack of the infamous semi-monocoque design in
the OB's (other brands) is an advantage in the restoration of a vintage
trailer as they do not suffer many of the problems you refer to and
they do not suffer a weight penalty because of it.
