In my opinion, cars were used up until about 1979 for several reasons.  
One being that before they were downsized in about 1980 cars were more 
comfortable and able to carry more than two people, they had large 
engines, solid transmissions and were built on frames and not unibody.  
Pickups were mainly one seat, Dodge came out with the extended cab in 
1972 I don't think that Ford and GM followed until several years later, 
and crew cabs were seldom seen.  Also, don't forget that beginning in 
1973 there was the nation wide 55 MPH speed limit on all roads which was 
not repealed until the 1980's.  Even though many drivers exceeded the 55 
limit, it did keep average speed below the 80 to 85 which you see on 
interstates today.

Also trailers were lighter than they are now.
