I have a 1976 31' Airstream that I tow with a 2005 Suburban 1500. Prior to
the 2005 Suburban I had a 2000 Suburban 1500 and prior to that I had a 1994
Suburban 1500. I have been towing my current Airstream and a previous
Airstream for more than 15 years. I have been from coast to coast and as
high as Durango CO. I have never had a problem with the Suburban 1500. But I
agree today you need the biggest truck you can get. If I were full-timing I
would probably opt for the Suburban 2500 or some other 3/4 ton truck. But
since my Suburban is also my everyday vehicle, I don't see the need for the
extra muscle now.

Its interesting to look at the tow vehicles that were used in the late to
mid seventies. Most people used a big car. The traffic was much different
then and travel was at a slower pace. I had to drive over to Beaumont from
Houston yesterday on I-10, without the A/S. Coming and going 16 wheeler
trucks as far as you could see. I am driving 75 mph and the trucks are
passing me like I am standing still. Its just not as easy to get out on the
highway today pulling a trailer. You can't drive at a reasonable pace. Out
of self defense you have to try and keep up with the flow of traffic. It
won't be long until a modified diesel semi will be the tow vehicle of
choice. Breaker, Breaker good buddy I'm east bound and down.
