    Synthetic is better but cost more.
    You've heard the saying "You get what you pay for" right?
    With synthetic you'll want a filter designed for synthetics to achieve the 
full benefit of using synthetic oil. On  the Ford 7.3L T/Diesel the Mobil one 
filter is P/N M1-601.
Yes it cost more than a Luber Finer or Purolator. Wouldn't recommend Fram.
If you want to stick with dino-oil Mobil Delvac 1300 or Amsoil is best. Yes I 
know a lot of diesel owners like Shell Rotella T, Shell pushes the soot control. 
But I don't know of any manufacture that roll's them off the line with Rotella 
in it. But there are several that roll 'em  out with Mobil Delvac 1300. "The 
Million Mile Oil".
Castrol is just an ok oil that gets a lot of publicity, ads. If you want, check 
out the four bearing wear test and it gives the results of the different brands.

    I've read the other post on this topic and yes there are some good points 
and good info. Yes I disagree with some. 1- Don't break in an engine with 
synthetic. Wrong. The sooner you get synthetic oil in the better. There are 
many, many auto's now that come straight out the factory with Mobile 1 Synthetic 
or a synthetic blend, and not just your high end cars/trucks either. 2- A big 
misconception of using synthetics is that once you use it you can't go back to 
dino-oil. Wrong. You do not however want to start using a full synthetic oil 
after you've ran dino-oil for 75,000+ miles. Higher mileage oil is actually a 
synthetic blend which is a mixture of synthetic/dino oils. Recommend 
drain/change interval. I like the 3000 mile interval since I have a mobile lube 
service. Do I push it no. I want repeat business but the car/truck owner chooses 
their own interval. I track it based on their input. I service many delivery 
trucks at 3K,4K and 5K. The more frequent interval customers usually carry heavy 
loads and drive in town a lot. The 4K'er's carry loads but do a lot more 
distance/open roads. 
    One thing that's often overlooked is the air filter, this does effect the 
oil change interval since your engine draws outside air. And air filter 
typically last 12-18 months depending on driving conditions. Keeping it clean 
also helps keep your motor clean, it also helps improve your mileage. K&N 
filters- No. Yes they are good, but by the time you bought the cleaner 
conditioner and your time you could have slapped a new Purolator air filter in 
changed the oil and lube it by the time you got finished washing/conditioning 
the K&N filter.
