Hi Jim,
I did exactly as the above for my 2004 GMC Duramax Diesel, and plan on doing
an oil change one time per year. I added Amsoil's Dual Remote Filter System,
and have set up an oil analysis procedure with an Independent Lab that does
this for big over the road trucks. Lots of the over the road trucks never
change the oil, just the filters, and get over 1,000,000 miles out of the
oil. 
My dealer's Service Manager is in agreement with this approach, and
recommended the Amsoil as the best of the best.
I towed from Wilmington, NC, out through the Rockies last fall with the
Synthetic setup, and all went well. I had the oil, Tranny Fluid (Synthetic
from Allison to start with), and put synthetic in the other gear boxes after
returning during the winter. I will tow out through the Rockies, and up and
down the East Coast this summer before changing the oil again this winter. I
will draw samples for an analysis about every 6,000 miles.
