Jim,

What you are refering to is called "equalization" and is only for standard
lead-acid batteries. Most modern 3-stage battery chargers incorporate this
feature, I recently had to replace my charger and did extensive searching
for the best deal and found Iota  http://www.iotaengineering.com/power.htm
and have been very pleased. Once you use one of these you will never go back
to that noisy humming converter!
