Thanks all.  I will look into ordering a replacement strap.

By the way, my awning is also difficult to raise when telescoping the 
side poles.  I will check to see if mine are bent.  I assume that 
when the awning is all rolled up in the stored position you can 
remove one arm to clean or repair it, and the rolled up awning will 
stay in place.
