RE: [A/S] cleaning drapery

The problem with trying to clean draperies which are more than 15 years old
is that the darkened color is not soil but sun damage. The fabric is
essentially burned from the exposure to the sun and is very weak. Hence it
will fall apart when you wash it.

If the drapes are not sun damaged, the safest thing is to have them dry
cleaned. However, washing in a neutral (ph) detergent and water will
actually clean them the best.

Best bet, go to James Ambrusco (sp?)and get new drapes. He does EXCELLENT
work and is very honest and reliable. His drapes fit very well and he uses
new slides and elastic. (Both the plastic slides and the elastic also
deteriorate with age and sun exposure.) I am very happy with the drapes he
made for my '76 Tradewind.
