There are certain parts that are still recovering from the I10 shaker
between Baton Rouge and Beaumont. Also it is extremely narrow it seems at
least, and filled with huge trucks. A bad piece of scenery.
Have you thought of crossing the Mississippi at Natchez and going cross
Louisiana through Alexandria and Leesville and coming into Texas near
Jasper. Pretty country.
We two laned across Texas to avoid I 10 when we went to Galveston and
Mustang Island this winter. It was fun and we saw something else beside the
rear of the semi ahead. The time worked out OK too.
Also when you get just into Texas, past the Welcome Centre, you will see a
Highway 87 leading to 73. We used that to bypass Beaumont and I10 and it was
largely us and a few pelicans. There is one humungus bridge and if you don't
like heights, which seem exaggerated in the truck, perhaps this is not for
you, because it simply sails up into the sky and then down again. The side
barriers were obviously meant for people in VW's. White knuckle time.

      She: It's OK now, dear, just relax and unhook your knee from around
the steering column
      He: Oh, no it's OK)
I exaggerate.
73 leads to Winnie and there you can go to the Bolivar Peninsula and cross
on the ferry (free) to Galveston. We took our Suburban and International
across several ferries in Texas with no problem boarding or leaving.

By the way, if anyone is headed from Fla to Tex, consider a stop at Lake
Fosse State Park near New Iberia.LA
 Takes a bit of effort to get there, but a fun place with some back in sites
that are right on the bayou. They have installed little decks out over the
bayou where you can sit and watch the catfish play, the pileated woodpecker
shatter dead trees, and wait for Shania (the alligator) to sun herself on
the dead log. Buy some of that Cajun sausage (the white stuff with the rice
and ?? filling) and settle in for some good eatin'. Great showers, electric
and water at the site, dumper down the road. This time of year, humidity and
mosquitoes were no problem, and the alligators and water moccasins are all
asleep.
