Been down that road, Herb.

My wife now only dislikes the diesel noise at idle and with the windows 
down.  On the highway it's a bit louder than a gas engine.  But there're no 
complaints from the rider...

The trade-off; better mileage, longer w/b, and infinitely greater pulling 
power is easily worth the insignificant (with windows up) noise level.

The vehicle is a Ford Excursion 4x with the 6.0 liter V8 diesel.
