I had to do this once when I lost the left rear tire and wheel on the tow
vehicle  while towing a 20', 7000 pound enclosed car trailer at about 65
mph.  It worked exactly as described.  After getting the rig straight, I
used the trailer brakes slow me down gradually until I could pull off the
highway.  The highway patrolman who stopped a few minutes later could not
believe I didn't roll the truck and trailer.  He said I did exactly the
right thing.
