Not every city is on a spot beam so in the case of
those cities who are on a nationwide transponder you
can leave the geographical area and still receive the
local broadcast.  Initally no one was on a spot beam,
hence the ability to travel all over the US and still
pick up locals.  Its only been the last few years as
Dish has launched new satellites that the locals have
been switching over to spot beams.  In your case they
needed to deactivate your receiver to drop KC out
since it wasn't on a spot beam.
