[A/S] mobil connectivity

Hi all-

We are working toward spending a year on the road beginning June 2004. 
I plan to manage some projects for the timber framers guild   
<www.tfguild.org>   along the way.   Connectivity will be very 
important to us, for work and with family and friends. E mail and cell 
phones, and preferably a speedy web connection. We're not big TV 
viewers, so that's not an important part of the equation.

Is there a consensus as to the best way to go?  Satellite? Coffee shops 
/ McDonald's with Wi Fi (check out   <www.wi-fihotspotlist.com/>   ) ?
dial up ISP with many local numbers?

We currently use Earthlink, which has good national dial up access. We 
also use U.S. Cellular, which I'm less than thrilled with re: national 
coverage and roaming costs. Our new 15" G4 Powerbook is blazing..
