[A/S] Slab City

Hi B & W,

Before we rolled into the Slabs, I paid particular attention to the kind of
stores along the road before the last turn. There's not much available for
restocking the larder. Camping is free and the only water is what we
brought with us. Our holding tanks were empty.

The Slabs are located near the southwest end of the Salton Sea. They are
also south of Indio where there's a county park with a campground. We used
that park as a resupply point before going into Slab City.

Take your camera and be ready for a picture of the entrance. We've seen
unusual but this is unusual to the nth degree.

After we arrived, I picked a parking place next to a gully on the street
side so late night arrivals couldn't park up close and personal beside us.
On the curb side was a large scrawny shrub near our entrance door so day
time lolligaggers couldn't kick up dust near us as they drove around the
area. I avoided places near trash heaps or low ground and areas where I'd
have to maneuver carefully to get out of our parking spot.

All the slab sites were taken by folks who had built makeshift structures on
them. Maybe these folks were the true Slab City Diehards. They certainly
were creative about "sprucing up" their place in the sun.

In the southwestern part of our country, there are hundreds of free
places to park with many of them more scenic and just as rustic. For
example, the BLM land south of Ajo has more shade trees, is easily
accessible to restocking fuel, groceries, water, emptying our waste tanks
and doing email. Plus, picking up fresh seafood in Mexico is a pleasure.

There's more, but I'm trying to stay on topic and not stray.

Terry
