With 4 gallons in and nothing to show for it, my guess
would also be that you are filling the water heater
and that the bypass is not closed.  I can't answer
though why you haven't seen anything coming from the
water heater.  It doesn't make much sense to me.

It's unfortunate that the former owner didn't go over
this with you.  Since you have checked out the
archives and A/S forums sites, my next best piece of
advice is also to see if you can't get to a dealer and
let him go over it, and let him show you the
winterizing steps for your particular model.  

Your particular clime is not too forgiving so you've
got to be sure this gets done correctly.  There is no
margin for error here.  The fact that its not showing
in the water heater gives me some concern, although
your water heater drain could be stopped up.  I assume
your husband is pulling the water heater drain plug
out and not just using the pressure relief valve?
