  You will want more than a simple volt meter. You want a "multi 
meter" It can read both AC & DC voltages, it reads amps, and can 
serve as a continuity meter. They can be gotten at Radio Shack and 
can be found at automotive parts supply stores. Also discount stores 
will have them. Try to get one that will serve your needs without 
being so complicated that it overwhelms you.  Good luck Arnie
