Re: [A/S] in an emergency ...

all of these are good BUT --- using a "proper" tow vehicle which a Taureg in
this discussion is certainly not, reduces the fine tuned (race?) driving
instincts which most of us on this list lost about 40 yrs ago.

iow, when you are pulling with a pipsqueak, you have to be on a hair edge and no
matter what hitch you have, etc can begin to compensate for that drive south
into Sheridan WY with a 40 mph side wind and being passed at 80 by heavy
haulers.
otoh, we in our more appropriate pullers are hardly bothered, arriving rested in
Sheridan as opposed to the white-as-a-sheet and rung out to dry, pending
collapse (this was me with a 90 Suburban with Reese hitch with those cam
thingies, 1500 size with the 350ci engine, etc. Three 3 months later I had a
pullrite and have never had a problem since. especially after I got rid of that
wimp engine, etc. and got a 7.3L diesel.)

obviously, the Expedition in Miss is a good example of too short a tow vehicle
front-rear axle distance and very likely, an improperly set up trailer braking
to truck braking ratio in an uncontrolled emergency stopping and maneuvering
situation. Fact is, with proper training, and proper set up, that
accident/destruction would not have happened. Point is, the tow was too light
and too short in wheelbase, to control that trailer. Think of what would have
happened if pulling with an equivalent Blazer, Taureg or whatever a 190 is,
etc. I doubt that the driver would have survived.

enuff. point is - get a proper sized tow to pull the trailer.

BTW, talking last night to a buddy in NY State, he says that the State Troopers
will actually pull over and impound the wrong vehicle:trailer set up.
Apparently their legislation is already in effect, can California or Mass be far
behind??<G>
