Sorry, but the transfer switch you'd need would cost way, way more than a bigger 
generaator.  You'd need a switch that senses and correctly phases the generator 
a/c current and the utility a/c current.  Lots of semi-conductor stuff and 
ultra-precision generator control.  I work for a utility, in case that makes you 
feel better about my knowledge level.
