they sell these here in Homer's during Hurrican season along with 5kw+ gensets
along with the plug in sets (convert the supply line from the genset to
individual circuit leads (after all, you don't need juice in your BR and
Bedrooms as much as you need it for your fridge and freezer.  most houses would
require AT LEAST a 10KW to run everything but the AC, about 15KW for that and
the full house.
The transfer switch is installed into the 200a main circuit fuse block as I
remember.
my whole house is on an 80 or 100a box (yeah but you should see the generally
found wiring on this house - 12ga and a lot of 14ga!!!) 1960s house.  lucky it
is not wired with aluminum...
Anyway, the Txfr switch is usually sold for about $150 here in Houston the last
time I looked which was about 7 yrs ago.  I still have a 5or 7kw on the
backporch which is still in the box!
