Hey Guys -

As far as starting on shore power and then switching to generator power
you do need some expensive switching set up but save your money.

Here's why.  The A/C starts on fan for about two minutes at which time the 
compressor
kicks in.  A/C cools until the desired temp is reached, at which point the 
compressor turns
off.   When the temp drops below your desired temp setting the compress 
kicks in again
killing the generator with an overload.

Unless you are well healed and have the big bucks to spend for some exotic 
switching gear
and sensor system, I'd buy the second gen or inverter.

Been there, done that, bought two Honda 2000i's and am a real happy camper.

You can however do it your way.  My .02
