Not only lucky, but "in the good old days" all the conditions were different 
from now.  Speed limits were lower. Trailers were lighter. Cars were built 
like tanks with bigger engines and heavy steel bodies and frames. They were 
also wider and longer, so they had a wider longer footprint for stability.

I've been towing on the freeway and had moving vans blow by me doing 80 
mph.....  

We know you can tow an Airstream with a bicycle, but does it make sense to do 
so? 

Trucks are built to do the job. They have heavier transmissions, heavier 
frames, heavier brakes, more torque, longer wheelbases and tons of storage 
space. I've put my truck into some hairy situations and I'm certain if I had 
been driving a less capable vehicle we would have ended up upside down or on 
our side on the road.  I'm also sure the Hensley made a big difference in 
those situations too. 

Early 90s Roadmasters and Crown Vics are the best *cars* to tow with if you 
want to go that route.
