Re: [A/S] GM 454 motor

Hi folks, I work on these trucks on a regular basis. It is true
that a half ton may have enough "get up and go" to pull your trailer,
but what about durability? They are built rather lite next to a 3/4
ton or one ton. Lighter differentials, drive lines, and trannys.
Smaller brakes and lighter spring packages. Less of the weight
necessary to manhandle a trailer. There are shops just like mine all
over the country making a good living repairing these over worked
trucks. Just since Xmas I have done three clutchs, two trannys, and
rebuilt a differential. All towing too big a trailer with too small
of a truck. Todays half tons are no more than passenger cars with
truck bodys on them. They look great sitting in the church parking
lot on Sunday morning. Every once in a while someone on this site
checks in and sez "back in the good old days they towed big trailers
with ordinary station wagons." So did I. We were darn lucky. Good
luck,,,, Arnie
