I had a 1992 Suburban 1500 1/2 ton with a 350 engine. 
It was woefully underpowered.  I tow a 1978 28' A/S
and although it towed well I always felt that I needed
more power to keep up with traffic on the interstate. 
I would get around 15 MPG without the trailer and 9-10
MPG towing the A/S.  I also had to watch the engine
temp on that vehicle.  I finally damaged the
transmission on it from towing (I did not tow in
overdrive).  I bought a 1999 2500 3/4 ton Suburban
this fall with a 454 engine and a 4:10 rear end.  This
truck is a puller.  I have not had the opportunity to
pull the A/S very far with this truck but the few
miles I pulled it was almost effortless.  The engine
temp remained cool.  It is so much better in the snow
than the old 1/2 ton.  I find that rarely do I need
the 4 wheel drive in the snow.  The downside is the
fuel milage.  I average without the trailer about
10-11 MPG.  My engine runs too cool at the moment and
I think that when I replace the thermostat and it runs
a bit warmer that my milage should improve a bit. 
Other than the milage I am thrilled with this vehicle.
 I would have prefered a diesel but they are hard to
come by without traveling out of state to get one.  I
believe that there is a dealer in Florida that
specializes in suburban diesels.  Hope this helps.
