That is _exactly_ what I get with my '02 SuperCab/LongBed 4WD 
commuting with all city/county streets and no highway use.

On the highway, I keep the cruise locked at 2000 rpm (71 mph)
and it gets 20 mpg, even through the hills of KY and TN

An tank of a mix of both types of driving gives what the math says it 
would, 17 mpg.

Haven't pulled the trailer far enough to use enough fuel to do an 
accurate mileage calculation.

I carry a bottle of Stanadyne Power Formula and a bottle of Racor 
biocide in the driver's side suicide door.  If I have to fill at a 
station of unknown quantity, I use both... a LOT cheaper than new 
injectors.  I also use the Stanadyne, which lowers the pour point, if 
I'm south (where fuel may not be winterized) heading north in the 
winter, and even locally if temperatures are going below zero.

I've done a lot of hot-rodding, including dyno testing, over the 
years, and always used a K&N based product.  I've found: 

a "drop-in" K&N element in a stock airbox gives very little hp gain.  
Given the additional dust passed (see below) it doesn't seem worth it 
to me.

an aftermarket intake using an exposed element gives more hp except 
off the line or at slow speeds, where it's breathing hot underhood 
air, rather than using the factory cold air intake, and may actually 
be worse, or cause detonation, in these conditions.

an aftermarket intake with a larger element in a larger airbox with 
cold air intake provides the most gain.

even when you use their grease to seal the element to the box, a 
freshly oiled K&N filter lets fine dust get through.  I found this 
off-roading, and you can see it downstream of the filter.  A dirty 
K&N element filters better than a clean one, but doesn't flow any 
better than a paper element

a buddy of mine's company tested them on large diesel generators and 
found higher concentrations of silicone in the oil when tested

a gas engine of the same displacement and operated at the same rpms, 
because of its throttle butterfly, flows a LOT less air over time 
than a diesel with its constantly wide open intake.  More air, more 
dirt.

I use Ford paper elements.
