Hi, George.
My furnace fan kicks on before the furnace is lit for safety purposes.  The fan blows out 
any build-up of gas prior to the furnace being lit.
Likewise, for safety purposes, the fan continues to blow after the furnace goes out to 
blow away any possible build-up of gases.
