Jim,
  The reason I said to use a momentary switch is to prevent running down 
the trailer battery and/or burning up the brake magnets. A maintained 
switch is very likely to be forgotten.

Point of information: My buddy & I were wondering about brake magnet 
heating while sitting at a stop light if you had the sort of controller 
that worked from the tow vehicle's pedal. (Hydraulic, time-based, or 
Jordan Untima) I had a spare magnet laying around, so we connected it to 
a battery and left it for 10 minutes or so. With that full voltage, the 
magnet got a bit warm, but didn't seem in any danger of frying. Although 
I've seen 'em fried, it apparently takes quite a while.
