Hi Jeff,

The puller will need a brake "controller"  It's mounted under the dash 
(usually) and has a plug under the rear bumper.  When the trailer is plugged 
into the plug one thing that's activated is the brakes. So you can start 
driving.... and simply hit the controller to test the brakes.

I'm not advocating this, but a one ton truck can probably pull the trailer 
without brakes if the driver stays back and drives with much caution (I drove 
mine from Knoxville to St Louis with no brakes and the trailer weighs over 
7000#..... much more than yours. It is illegal to do so though. If you have 
no brakes you might want to pull it rightr to an RV repair place.

Where is the trailer?

I wouldn't pull it with the Explorer........ if the Dodge transmission is 
going to crap out I wouldn't pull it with that either.  If you plan to enjoy 
the new trailer you'll need a new puller anyway..... might be the time to 
trade in the little SUV.
