OK, newbie question here....

I've been reading a bit about these "trailer brake" things and I am 
just wondering how in the heck do they work? (in the context of 
VINTAGE trailers and cars - as in pre-1970 or so - or do those years 
even HAVE trailer brakes?) Is it something that's activated off the 
brake lights; or mechanically from some kind of linkage to the brake 
pedal?  How do it know how much force to give the trailer brakes?

If anyone could enlighten me, or direct me to an informative web 
site, I'd appreciate it!
