The old old systems tied into the hydraulics of the tow vehicle for brake 
application.  The old systems used an inertia device to apply the brake in 
conjunction with the brake light.  The newer systems work with inertia 
devices or cables attached to the brake pedal to vary the braking 
effort.  New trailer brakes are electric. See http://www.Tekonsha.com/  for
