Hi Johnathon

The power on light in the panels of most Airstreams is not wired as 
you might expect.  The bulb was fed with 12 volt dc on one side and 
un-rectivied 12 volt ac on the other.  

For the transfromer to work you need to connect both wires from the 
bulb to the output of the little wall transformer. It is a touchy job 
on the printed panel in your 79 and everytime you handle that panel 
you risk damaging something more important like the tank readouts 
etc.  You might be better to just put another light somewhere close 
by or plug a night light into an outlet.
