Your idea of a dc wall transformer should work.  But since you jumpered the
light wire to the battery and it did not come on, you need to start there.
Maybe the bulb is bad or the socket is corroided, bad fuse.

After you get that working, the transfomer should work.  You may have to get
a bigger one like 500ma - 1000ma rating.  I don't know how much power the
light wants.

On the transformer make sure you ground the wire to the same ground point as
the battery uses.  The hot lead from the transformer to the light wire.  Use
a voltmeter to determine the polarity.
