[A/S] Solid State Panel AC on light..

Hi
I am hoping someone on the list will be able to help me.
I replaced the Original Univolt on my Coach with a Intelipower.
there was as I already knew, no separate wire to go to fuse block for the AC
on light to the Panel.
I had an idea of plugging in an AC-DC converter, from an old phone, and then
connect the hot wire to wire that goes to the fuse block.
The wire off the trnsformer divides into two, one hot and one neg. If I place
a test light between the two it completes the circuit and it lights. the
problem is if I use either one of the wires to the light and ground the test
light to any ground other than the remaining wire fro the transformer I get
nothing.
I also tried to run a jumper wire straight from Battery positive to the test
light and still it does nothing.
Is there anyway to get the light to work? Can my idea of using a transformer
work? With other ac outlet right there it would be great if it can.
