Glad to hear from another happy owner of a '72 27' Overlander.  We 
also have a Suburban, in this case a '96 K2500 4wd 454.  It does a 
great job, particularly with a Hensley.

Just a note of caution re towing in O/D. Even though the 454s come 
with the heavy duty 4L80E transmission, I've been warned by two 
separate mechanics NOT to tow in O/D.  The word is that while the 
engine, chassis, etc. are fully capable of pulling the O/D ratio in 
most situations, and even if you've added more trans cooling (I use a 
B&M aluminum trans pan), and even if the trans temp stays low, 
there's an electronic lockup which engages the O/D, and it does NOT 
have the strength to handle locking/unlocking cycles under load.  So, 
according to the mechanics, if I tow in O/D, even on the flat in 
moderate temps, I WILL be buying a rebuilt 4L80E.

Of course, towing in 3rd uses more gas, but also ensures better 
acceleration and lugability up hills, etc.
