We can speak for our 2002 Chevy 3/4 ton crew cab with long bed, powered by
the Duramax diesel with Allison transmission:
Without a trailer, we've averaged 19-20 mpg for over 20,000 miles since we
got it last November.
Seemingly effortless power, passing most other vehicles, going up long steep
grades (Colorado mtns, some 7% grades) that our former 1/2 ton Suburban
(gas) used to gasp at.
The Allison automatic transmission is great at automatically downshifting
and holding the truck back on steep downgrades, saving wear on truck brakes
on those long, long downhills.  (I don't know how this would work with
electric brake controllers and a trailer behind -- can anyone tell me?)
Rated to pull up to 12,000 lbs trailer or 15,000 lbs 5th wheel, this model
and engine/transmission combination should handle a 34' Excella with power
to spare.  It rides a bit tight empty;  its ride would improve with weight
behind it.
We liked the Chevy's crew cab over other the brands' crew cab because of the
way the back seat folds down flat, making a good flat platform for our large
dog, or for various cargo riding inside the cab.
Our only second thoughts, now that we've decided against getting a 5th
wheel:   We wish we had a short bed so the overall length/wheelbase would be
more easily maneuvered.
