Isabelle,

Take some fiberglass or aluminum screening like is used for screened windows
and cut out a piece that will allow about an inch overlap.  Cover the vent
pipe with this cut screen and secure with a stainless steel pipe clamp that
is bigger than the vent shaft itself.  This will stop bugs from getting into
the tank and it also facilitates tank ventilation.

I don't think you will get enough air movement with the tennis ball theory.
The older Airstreams only have screening pushed inside the pipe which works
very well to this day.
