[A/S] 1965 toilet question

Here is the background. A previous owner assumed the the toilet was 
causing the floor to rot away.  In reality it is the fact that the 
tail lights leak.  Any way, they gobbed plumbers putty in every 
possible joint between the bowl and the plastic base of the toilet. 
Is this the correct way to seal a toilet or will the rubber gasket 
actually work as it was obviously intended to do?  If it does require 
some sealer to help it out, what kind, where, and how much have 
others used?  Will anything other than plumbers putty stand up to 
toilet cleaning products, or are there special products just for RV's?
