I am using PEX tubing and a combination of Flair-IT brand connectors 
and compression fittings.  The crimp rings you refer to that your 
plumbing friend used are used with brass connectors.  They are 
apparently very secure, if properly crimped.  However, there are some 
places in my trailer where there is no way to get a crimping tool in 
position.  Besides, the blasted tool is very expensive!  The FLair-
IT fittings are more compact, and are great for emergency repairs as 
they can be installed on the polybutylene tubing, then removed and 
reinstalled when you get time to put in PEX.  They also really need a 
special tool that expands the ends long enough to slip over the 
nipple, but you can do it without the tool if you shove hard enough.  
Sometimes, however, there is simply no way I can get a Flair-IT on 
due to space or position, and then I use the compression fittings.  
If you make sure you get the retaining ring on the right way, they 
should hold perfectly well.

Another thing about PEX is that is can be bent in a radius four times 
the tubing diameter.  This has let me eliminate a few elbow 
connectors.  A connector that is not present will never leak.
