Jack,

Not that you wouldn't get twice the noise, just that the dB level wouldn't 
be double.  Sound measurement is not linear because of the way ears work.  
The numbers follow a logarithmic (powers of 10) scale.  Hence double the 
sound IS 3 dB, not double the 56 dB you started with.  Of course whether or 
not your ears would PERCEIVE it as twice the noise is a whole 'nother bag of 
doughnuts.
