Eric,
  I used one of those small Shurflo accumlator ("surge box") in our 
'old' Avion and one awaits installation in the 'new' one.

Although they don't use a backflow preventer, there IS a check valve at 
the city water inlet. That's to prevent your pumping all your water 
overboard when you energize the pump and don't have a cap on the city 
water inlet.
