Stephen,
  The Cummins as used in the Dodge, does not have glow plugs, it has an 
electrical grid, much like a toaster, in the intake manifold. The grid 
gets hot during the "wait to start" phase to heat the incoming air. 
Other Diesels, such as my VW use glow plugs and precombustion chambers. 
The glow plugs heat the air in the pre-cups and help vaporize the fuel 
as it sprays on/around them.
