I have a diesel that answers are as follows.

No they do not get quiter and no you really can not do
anything about it.  The engine is more powerful and
that is the nature of diesel.  The smell does not go
away either.

The glow plugs pre heat the cylinder so that the fuel
lights off easier in cold weather.
