Hi Emily-

Just wanted to tell you that I drove a VW camper from California to Maine
and back without any animals and, about 3 hours into the drive, realized it
was a dream come true. For me the trick was being completely ready--by
figuring out where my fears lay, and "solving" them--before I got on the
road. One thing I did was to have a small change purse on my keys with my
drivers license, gas card and about $5 in cash, so I could keep my "real"
purse (and money!) "under cover," my hands free to pump gas and wash
windshields, and no easyily grabbed purse to steal when I stopped at rest
stops. And, like Hunter, I mainly stayed in KOA's because I felt safe there.
I would say figure out what your real fears are and address them before you
set out. And then enjoy the adventure.

P.S. The very scariest thing that happened to me on my trip was driving in
pea soup fog and snow in Wyoming and then spinning out on an icy bridge. (As
you can see, I lived to tell the tale.) It could have been avoided if I had
paid attention to my gut feeling about the weather rather than listening to
the "authorities." Sometimes its hard to remember that YOU are the authority
on your trip.
