[A/S] Deep Fried Battery

I recently bought an Intellipower converter and "Charge Wizard" to 
replace the original Univolt in my '72 Overlander. Plugged her in to a 
110 v source last Monday, anticipating the Charge Wizard would 
automatically charge up my deep cycle battery, and that I'd then switch 
over to my pair of Trojan 105's and top them off next. Went out to the 
trailer yesterday, and found the single 3-year old deep cycle battery 
had exploded - two cracks over 6 inches long, caps blown off, and juice 
filling the rear battery compartment. This was not the anticipated result.

I'm writing for advice:

1. Is this a defective Charge Wizard, that just kept charging the 
battery at maximum output and cooked it?
2. Is this a defective Intellipower charger?
3. Is this and acceptible demise for a 3 year old battery?
4. I'm exceedingly hesitant to subject my T105's to the same treatment, 
with possibly the same outcome on virtually new batteries.
5. Most importantly - opinions and suggestions welcome.
