Mark,
  I tend to agree with Brian, it sounds like a spark occurred near that 
battery while it was being charged.

When you connect it to your new Trojans, wire an ammeter in series to 
see what's happening. Use a regular automotive 60-0-60 ammeter, but make 
  sure that you use #10 wire or larger and that all connections are secure.

As Brian said, wash out the battery compartment thoroughly, using lots 
and lots of water.
