Re: [A/S] Urgent clearcoat help needed

Jan,

In 94 Airstream made their first attempt to change the skin finish from the old
clearcote to a new polyurethane factory applied finish. The testing results did not
match up with the reality. Some coach finishes started to deteriorate within 6 months
of manufacturer. They were into the 96 production year before they realized the extent
of the problem and started trying to fix it. The white discoloration you describe was
the classic symptom of failure of that original finish. Due to a series of
circumstances beyond belief coach finishes did not stabilize until mid 98. During that
time several rather frantic efforts were made to refinish the coaches with very mixed
results.
If you want to pursue having the coach refinished by anyone you need to describe the
condition as best you can. They may or may not even want to try to do the job.
Cost of complete recoats run in the $100-$150 per linear foot range.
