Our '62 Land Yacht single axle 22' has a tankless water heater
built into the unit.  I think it was made in France (the water
heater).  Anyway, we got caught in a freeze and fractured some
parts and since it was 15+ years old and parts were unavailable,
we took it out and put in an English-made tankless unit.  Took a
bit of effort, but nothing major (no sheet metal work, just
rebending the copper piping and refitting the propane line).  Both
these units worked very well, especially at sea level.  In the
high mountains (8000+), they did not heat the water as well.
Maybe this was because the water was a lot colder, and maybe it
was the reduced oxygen at those elevations that made the burner
less effective, or maybe it was the higher elevation made the
propane regulator produce fuel at a lower rate.  These units do
use fuel at a high rate, but for only a short time (to meet the
hot water demand).

Tankless water heaters are not seen often in the USA, but they are
much more common in Europe, especially in small homes and
apartments.  Seems they would be ideal in TTs and 5Ws due to
limited space, etc.
