I would bet you finish is a lacqure based product and you could try a safe 
product first call CitraStrip. I use this in my classes and it does a pretty 
good job. Then the next thing is sanding. If the stripper works correctly you 
can use a 220 grit non loading sandpaper. But be very careful veneer is very 
thin and you could burn through it quit easily. 

I haven't looked at the stain yet but there are enough commercial products 
out there to match up. Remember you can use the same brand and blend if 
necessary. Then apply a finish a cellouse lacqure or poly should be more than 
sufficient. Aplly at least three coats and sand in between coats. Lightly 
sand with a 320 grit. the last coat you can use a scotchbrite pad and then 
buff.
